Franwell, Inc. is not an educational software company. Primarily we develop RFID systems, provide RFID systems integration and consulting services, and we write business applications for the perishable foods industry. However, one of our programmers is also a homeschooling parent who had a vision for meeting specific documentation needs. He and another programmer, who specializes in database engineering, wrote the software together several years ago.
Many customers have wondered why the Companion<*dv_4*> has not yet been upgraded. We certainly believe that a very good product can always be made better. In the case of the Companion, upgrading from an old database to a newer one would include upgrading programming methodology and language, as well; essentially, rewriting the entire program. <*dv_1*>As much as we'd love to offer a new version, the current focus of our development resources must of necessity be directed toward our main products and services.
Frankly, the Homeschooler's Companion is not a profitable product. We have always seen it as a wonderfully helpful tool that should be affordable for any family. We have never charged any fees beyond the initial user license, when customers need an access code for re-installation. We have never charged for customer support when providing technical help over the telephone, regardless of call length.
